The above tool uses Consumer Price Index data from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Some alternative data sources include:

  • Billion Price Project - a service from MIT alumni compiled from a database of online products. They also publish data at PriceStats.com.
  • Premise Data - database built from both an online scrape & hundreds of boots-on-the-ground individuals checking things like local produce pricing.
  • Shadow Stats - John Williams corrects for hedonic adjustments and similar impacts, skewing his inflation numbers significantly above the printed official CPI-U numbers.
  • Google Domestic Trends - built from sampling Google search traffic across specific sectors of the economy.
